Ah, driver’s ed. The excitement of getting your learner’s permit, the stress of studying for your exam. Years down the road, it can be easy to forget a lot of the important information you actually learned in class. How about a refresher?
- Remember the three-second rule? The safe distance for following a car is three seconds, or about 100 feet. To measure the three-second rule, find a stationary object like a lamppost. When the car in front of you passes that object, start counting and stop when you pass it. If it’s more than three seconds, you’re doing great! If it’s less, slow down a little. You may need to increase this interval at night or during bad weather.
- Emergency vehicles like ambulances and police vehicles risk their lives to keep us safe. Do your part to keep them safe. When you hear sirens or see lights, pull over – even if they’re moving in the opposite direction. And if you see an emergency vehicle on the side of the road, move to the far lane, if possible.
- Headlights. Most of us have automatic headlights these days, but sometimes they need a little help along the way. Headlights need to come on at dawn and dusk, and it’s also important to use them in the rain or snow. Don’t forget, if it’s foggy, only use your low-beams—not your high.
